- Examining and analyzing hair, fibre samples, and other evidence
- Testing for alcohol, drugs, or toxins in blood and body fluid samples
- Analyzing and comparing DNA samples
- Identify bullets, forged documents, and substances used to start fires
- Testify in court about their findings
Work Environment and Hours
- RCMP, provincial governments, and private forensic labs
- Most work is indoors in labs and offices
- Could be hazardous; exposure to harmful chemicals
- Dealing with evidence from crime scenes may be unpleasant
- Most work regular hours, but overtime may be required
Earnings
- $50,000 to $90,000 a year
- Depend on experience, education, and employer
Qualifications
Level of Education: University
- At least a bachelor’s degree in forensic science or a related field
- A master’s degree is often preferred by employers
- On-the-job training once hired
