- Searching for and digging up artefacts at dig sites
- Cleaning, restoring, and studying uncovered artefacts
- Working with anthropologists to draw conclusions about societies
- Writing reports on findings
- Possibly cataloguing and conserving collections in museums

- Universities, colleges, museums, governments, and private companies
- A lot of research is done indoors, in labs, libraries, and museums
- Fieldwork is done outdoors, often in remote locations
- Digging for artefacts is physically tiring
- Professors work long hours
Earnings
- $40,000 to $130,000 a year or more for professors
- $35,000 to $80,000 a year or more for other archaeologists
- Salaries depend on employer and level of education
Qualifications
Level of Education: University
- At least a master's degree
- A PhD is required to teach at a university
- A PhD may also be required to dig up artefacts in foreign countries
