- Designing and conducting experiments
- Studying microbes such as yeast, fungi, and bacteria
- Collecting, processing, and interpreting biological data
- Maintaining logs and records as well as preparing and presenting reports
- Developing or improving foods, drugs, or other products and ways to make them
Work Environment and Hours
- Governments, universities, and companies in the food, drug, agricultural, and other industries
- Work mainly indoors in labs
- Wear protective clothing when handling chemicals
- Use microscopes, centrifuges, and other scientific equipment in the lab
- Most work regular hours, but overtime may be required
Earnings
- $30,000 to $100,000 or more
- Salaries depend on employer, education, and experience
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in biotechnology or a related field
- A master’s degree or PhD can be helpful for advancement
- A PhD is required to teach at a university
